Fishing fun last week, and a warning

Fishing last week was an event.  In one evening of fishing I caught 7 blue gill, 2 Bass, and one catfish.  In one day last week it was a slow day I caught 3 Bass and two blue gill.

For the record I caught 10 at Lake Storey in Galesburg, IL.  The rest at Snakeden Hollow past Victoria, IL.

It was an awesome week for me.  I feel like I am becoming a better fisherman.

Warning: I messed up and didn't take sunscreen.

I have learned a painful lesson about sunscreen being a necessity!!

Happy Independence Day 2020

Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth of July my friends.  I hope today is a safe and great day for you all.  For many of us we aren't celebrating it in a way we remember.  Today is a traditional day in America for many of us.  Whether we are rooted in the American history, the celebrations of our countries independence, attending fireworks shows or simply enjoying a family gathering this is the day that America celebrates her independence, our ability to do all the aforementioned things, because at her heart, in America, we are all free.

In the year 2020, we are not as free as we once believed.  We've all seen the effects of the global pandemic, many of us losing friends or loved ones as it's ravaged the world.  States were locked down, so to speak.  For months we were struggling with the new realities.  Gyms closed, movie theatres closed, bars and restaurants were closed and the hours and operations of essential businesses were changed, some for the foreseeable futures.

Many people found themselves faced with loss of income, loss of routine and I'd dare say the loss of purpose as the global economy came to a near complete halt.  While governments and leadership still struggles to cope with the aftermath of the pandemic, people struggle to reassemble their lives and find their way in the new world.  For it is a new world, ladies and gentlemen, whether we like it or not.

Just as things started to move forward and the numbers of new infections go down, a cop in Minneapolis and four of his cohorts brought about the downfall of American civilization as we know it.  In the midst of an infection plaguing the globe, an economic nightmare still affecting the country and an uncertain future, anger and violence began filling the streets of our country as the worst days in America played out on our televisions, in our papers, on social media and right before our eyes in some cases.

What the fourth of July should mean is the same thing that America, the Statue of Liberty and even Mt. Rushmore should mean.  They're symbols, symbolic reminders of what we were, what we are today and what we can be.  Many people won't try to believe that but, remember when you were young, still had ideals and dreams.  Things like fear of a pandemic hadn't frightened you.  Things like the color of someone's skin didn't matter to you.  Your friends were your friends, you sat by your neighbors and complete strangers and you all watched the fireworks, all sang or listened to the National Anthem and you all felt like a community.  Albeit, for some, it's only during the times of celebration and gatherings that you feel this way.  Then life returns to what it was, until the next year.

For me, the fourth of July is a historic date.  It's not only a date signifying the freedom of our land.  It's not just a day to remember the ones that gave for our freedoms; our freedoms to disagree, to revolt, to speak out against the slights of government or those small group of men who did wrong.  Today, I remember the good times and the thought of what we could be as a people in a country that stands for what's right, no matter how many times it misses the mark.  Today, I remember that  in my life I've I was raised to respect everybody, no matter the differences between us.  Today I remember that one of those people responsible was my dad, who was born on the fourth of July.

Happy Birthday Dad, it's been ten years and I still think about you everyday.

Midwest Realities - A Low Thought!

As the pandemic continues we realize as a people that there are going to be harsh times ahead for many.  The economy cannot fail as a nation must survive.  If everyone is locked up in their homes then how do they live?

Being human isn't about just surviving, it is about living.  Without income, we cannot survive.  The government cannot just keep borrowing money or writing checks to people to keep us alive.  Our income actually funds the government.  If we don't work, the government has no money to help people out.  They may come up with painful long term ways of getting people help, but at what cost?

Our children and our children's children will be paying for many of the economic mistakes made now out of necessity.  However, if we do not work, in the end it isn't about surviving, it is about living.  We as humans also can suffer mental disorders of the highest level.  Since this pandemic has started, the lock downs have caused increased levels of depression in many people.  In some cases it has become known that this depression has caused death as suicide rates have increased.

If you have a hobby and can do something during your states stay at home orders, stay busy.  Most of all, remember others as well.  Whether it be a phone call, a video call, or just an email, staying in contact with others will help them and help you get through these dark times.

We all need to remember, no matter the darkness in this world, we are not lone individuals.  Staying in contact with those friends, family, and even co-workers you haven't seen in a while, will help you survive so you can live!

Why I cannot catch a BASS?

I love #Fishing and in this case, I have had some problems catching BASS.  I don't know if there are none, or what, but I found an article that helps me understand some of the reasons I might have in my head about my lack of luck catching a BASS might not be entirely real.

An Interesting Lure, worth a try!!!

I am sure if you are a fishing expert or even just a novice with a little experience, you have heard of these "Game Changer" lures.  As everyone knows experience is the key to knowing if a lure is good.

My experience is that live bait is always the best.  I consider myself just a novice and one that doesn't have as much experience as he would like.  I have found though that it takes time to understand what lures might work and what lures do not.

One lure I have had some experience in catching bass has been this "Game Changer" lure.  The "Lure" is by Flymen Chocklett. They can be pricey depending on where you buy them, but I do recommend if you can giving them a try to see how your fishing experience might improve.

A Great Way To Get Along? Opinion : Fishing!!!

In today's society with so much going on there seems to be a lack of hope in the media.  Everything is pandemic this or protest that.  We seem to just be forgetting the joys of everyone getting along.

Equality under the law is one of the pure Freedoms that Americans have fought for through this countries history.  At one point not everyone was treated equally.  Battles were fought to try and give everyone the very Freedoms that lead to this nation being created to begin with.  These freedoms included Religious Freedom and the Freedom of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Now the freedom to pursue happiness is always a question.  There is nothing that guarantees happiness.  No guarantees were given in the Constitution of the United States or in the Declaration of Independence.

However, sometimes that pursuit of happiness, whether guaranteed or not, actually can bring about what feels to be a high level of equality.

Fishing!!!!

The pure happiness in catching a fish can lead to frustrations over catching nothing, or excitement over catching a big enough fish that you feel pure joy over the accomplishment.

While out fishing I saw people from all backgrounds and races just enjoying the pure pleasure of "Fishing!!!"

It didn't matter who you were, it didn't matter the color of your skin, the community was out enjoying the day fishing in the channel coming off of "Lake Story" in Galesburg, IL.  People talked to each other, people and kids were excited about catching fish, I even overheard people asking questions about what kind of bait they were using.  Some were using store bought lures, some using strawberry bait, some were using good old fashion worms or night-crawlers.  It was like the news in the media didn't matter as people were just happy to be around one another.  No hatred, no anger, just love for the community and fishing.

It might seam amazing that one activity can unite people for a day, a few hours, or even a few weeks, or longer, but sometimes just being involved with one another can bring change in each others hearts and even bring equality to light in ways none of us ever really think about.  This goes not just for "Fishing," but for any sport.  Families and individuals alike should just enjoy the excitement and connections of being active in the healthy ways that sporting activities can bring.

I was happy to see so many people out and about.  It is a good sign that really "All Lives Matter" in the grand scheme of this world.  In summary, stay active, stay healthy, and stay involved.  Fish, Hike, Swim, play basketball, play football, or any sport that helps unite us as a society.  For me, I love the Fishing and see it as a great way to simply get along!!!

5 Do's for Fishing

1) "BE RESPECTFUL" of people and their space.  In today's society we hear about many dark things including the Corona-Virus (Covid-19).  Where it is difficult to always where a mask, when fishing outdoors, give people their space.  Especially if your are fishing from the side of a bank, being to close to others can risk overlapping of lines.  Plus, it is just respectful not to get to close to others you are not fishing with.

2) "NEVER LITTER" where you fish!  You wouldn't want to crap where you eat.  Throwing crap in the water that doesn't belong there or on the ground where you are fishing is almost the same as crapping where you eat.  Fishing for many helps provide food for their families.  Plus, we have to remember "Mother Earth" is meant for all of us.  If you drop litter around you, pick it up and take it with you until you can safely throw it in a trash container or better yet a "Recycling Bin!" Remember, we only have one planet, so lets make it enjoyable for all of us.

3) "CARE FOR THE FISH" if you can.  Fishing is a great sport.  If you can, catch and release the fish if you do not plan on eating it.  Additionally, only use barb-less hooks if possible when you are fishing, but planning on just releasing what you catch.

4) For trout fishing, never keep any trout over 12 inches in length.  Larger fish help make sure there are more of them for the future since they often have the best reproductive genes.  "BRING A CAMERA" to make sure if you do catch a large one  that you can document it for your records and to show off that big catch to your friends and family.

5) "NEVER GO FISHING ALONE" if you cannot tell someone where you are going.  Fishing may bring with it little potential injury compared to other sports, but there are always possibilities of something not going right whenever you are on the water.  Because of this, always be safe and whenever possible "CARRY A FIRST AID KIT" when ever you are fishing.  You never know when you will need it.  After all, who has never accidentally stuck themselves with a hook or someone else?
